In December, 2019 a coronavirus was identified and named as 2019-nCoV. It most likely originated from a coronavirus in the bat population, although it is currently unclear if there was an intermediate host. It is known that a wide variety of animals were sold at a seafood market in Wuhan, China to which many of the earliest cases were connected.
This new coronavirus is a respiratory virus ... which spreads primarily through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes, or through droplets of saliva or discharge from the nose.
In February, 2020 a man from Hong Kong who had been on the cruise ship, Diamond Princess tested positive for the new coronavirus six days after leaving the ship. He had boarded the ship in Japan and stayed on board for five days, then disembarked in his hometown.
A few days later the cruise ship had docked in the port of Yokohama, Japan as part of its cruise itinerary. Eventually more people tested positive for the virus and the entire vessel was put into quarantine. This was an ongoing situation with over 3000 people onboard.
Other cruise ships have also been affected worldwide. Some passengers have departed to their country of origin;see the news feeds on this site.
